VALPARAISO | On Oct. 20, Ox Baker Sr.’s heart gave out.
"He was 80 years old ... most professional wrestlers don't live nearly that long," Baker's son Ox Baker Jr. said. "One of the last shows he did was during his 80th birthday last April in Marion, Ohio.
"What kept him going for so long was his love for the fans."
Ox Baker paved the way for all those who have parlayed their pro wrestling careers into movie careers when he starred opposite of Kurt Russell in the box office hit and enduring cult classic "Escape from New York."
"I love to hurt people," was his favorite catchphrase, and Ox Baker allegedly did more than that. Two victims of his infamous "Hurt Punch" died shortly thereafter. The actual causes of death were inconclusive, nonetheless they helped make one of the scariest-looking bad guys of all time; that was much more frightening.
Now the "Hurt Punch" is the finishing blow for Ox Baker Jr., who incidentally also loves to hurt people. One guy he particularly wants to injure is Dick the Bruiser Jr., who Baker Jr. will face in the main event of the "Pro Wrestling King" show Dec. 7 at the Valparaiso Moose Lodge. It will be a no-disqualification Russian Chain Match, which Baker Jr. considers a more favorable setting from the last time the two arch-rivals met."It was a cage match, and he came out with a dog," said Baker Jr., who actually got bit by the dog. "Imagine being locked in a cage with a vicious dog."Ox Baker Jr. has been assured that Bruiser Jr. won't bring his dog this time around. Instead, the Russian Brute will be in Bruiser Jr.'s corner."He's just as ugly as that dog," Baker Jr. said about the Brute.Harsh assessment, but Baker Jr. has reason to be down on the Russian Brute. His father managed the Brute, who went on to become an American Wrestling Association superstar amidst the likes of Hulk Hogan, Jesse Ventura, Ken Patera; and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan before they jumped ship to what was then called the World Wrestling Federation. Not only is the Brute — who also wrestled in the WWF — disrespecting the memory of the man who trained him by managing against his surviving son, he also carries on like an ungracious expatriate.American ... phew! Northwest Indiana ... phew! I can't stand it here!" the Russian Brute said before his rant became political."Vladimir Putin is a great leader," the Brute said of the Russian president. "Your pathetic country would be much better off if he took over the USA."When an over-matched reporter dared to liken Putin to a James Bond villain...- "What?! Putin would crush that puny Brit James Bond like I should crush you!"
In the likelihood of the Russian Brute interfering with the match, Valparaiso Moose Lodge Governor Lee Evans will be in Ox Baker Jr.'s corner to watch his back.
Proceeds from the show, which is being held by TRB Sports LLC., will benefit the Lodge. TRB Sports LLC frequently holds benefit shows, and is run by Chicago resident George Petraski, who bears a striking resemblance to the Russian Brute.
Ox Baker Jr., who bears a resemblance to his father — not so much in size but more in badass facial hair — has been wrestling for 17 years.
"I'm doing okay," the Waterloo, Iowa resident said. "It definitely takes a toll on you, but I don't wrestle five or six days a week because there are no longer weeknight shows on the independent circuit. All the big wrestling organizations have taken over that market."
For years, Ox Baker Jr. has petitioned the WWE to consider his father for its Hall of Fame.
"I never got much of a response," he said. "But you know how it is, now that he's dead he probably has a much better chance of getting in."Ox Baker Jr. Has a few words for all the Veteran's out there...USA ..USA....
